Video Doesn't Forgive Technical Improvisation

A connection or microphone issue mid-interview can ruin otherwise excellent preparation. Technical prep isn't optional — it's just as much a part of your preparation as your answers to the behavioral questions covered in our complete interview preparation guide.

Before the Interview: The Technical Checklist

  • Test the platform being used (Zoom, Teams, Google Meet) at least the day before, not 5 minutes beforehand.
  • Check your internet connection: use a wired connection if possible, or sit close to your router.
  • Charge your devices to 100%, even for an interview on a desktop computer — power outages happen.
  • Prepare a backup plan: have the recruiter's phone number in case of a major technical issue.
  • Close other apps and tabs that could trigger notifications or slow down your device.

Your Environment Matters as Much as Your Outfit

  • A neutral, tidy background: an artificially blurred background can sometimes create distracting visual artifacts — a real neutral background is preferable when possible.
  • Lighting in front of you, never backlit (with your back to a window).
  • Guaranteed silence: give people around you a heads-up, mute sound notifications on all your devices.
  • Camera at eye level, not looking up from a laptop placed too low.

Where to Look: The Camera, Not the Screen

The most common video interview mistake is looking at the interviewer's face on the screen rather than the camera lens. To the recruiter, this looks like you're looking elsewhere. Practice speaking while looking directly at the camera, especially during your answers to important questions.

Silences Are Handled Differently Remotely

Micro-lag and audio dropouts are common on video calls. Don't hesitate to politely ask for a question to be repeated if you didn't catch it clearly, rather than giving an off-target answer out of fear of seeming disorganized — this is a normal and expected reflex in a remote interview.
