Many candidates hesitate to follow up, afraid of seeming pushy. Yet it's generally a positive signal for a recruiter: it shows genuine interest and the ability to follow up professionally — a skill valued in nearly every job.

The Right Timing to Follow Up

Timing depends on the type of application:

  • After sending a resume with no response: wait 1 to 2 weeks before your first follow-up. Any earlier and it can seem impatient; beyond a month, the recruiter's interest in your profile may have faded.
  • After an interview: a follow-up is expected within 48 hours, in the form of a thank-you email, then a second follow-up if there's no response after the timeline the recruiter mentioned (typically 1 to 3 weeks).

How to Word an Effective Follow-Up

A good follow-up stays short, polite, and ideally adds new information rather than just asking for a response again:

"Hello [Name], I wanted to follow up regarding my application for the [job title] position, submitted on [date]. I remain very interested in this opportunity and am available to talk whenever convenient. Best regards,"

If possible, add a piece of value: a recent achievement, a link to a project, or a piece of company news that reinforces your motivation.

How Many Times Should You Follow Up?

Beyond two follow-ups with no response, it's best to consider the application closed and focus your energy elsewhere. Pushing further becomes counterproductive and can hurt your image for future opportunities with the same company.

The Right Channel to Follow Up

  • Email: the default channel, professional and traceable.
