Mistake #1: Using the Same Resume for Every Posting
Easy Apply defaults to reusing the resume already on your profile. Nothing stops you from uploading a different, tailored resume at the moment of applying, though. Not doing so is the most common and most costly mistake.
Mistake #2: A LinkedIn Profile Inconsistent With the Resume Sent
An interested recruiter will almost always check your LinkedIn profile alongside the resume they received. Inconsistent dates, job titles, or missing experience between the two creates immediate doubt about the reliability of your application. Keep both in sync.
Mistake #3: Neglecting Your Profile Photo and Banner
Unlike a resume, where a photo is optional (see our article on whether you should put a photo on your resume), on LinkedIn it's an expected standard. A profile with no professional photo or a default banner reads as inactive or not serious.
Mistake #4: Ignoring the Personalized Note
LinkedIn lets you add a short note or message when using Easy Apply on many postings. This option gets skipped far too often, even though it lets you slip in a personalized hook that sets your application apart from the mass of one-click applications.
Mistake #5: Applying Without Any Prior Engagement With the Company
A LinkedIn application carries more weight if your profile already shows a minimum of engagement with the industry or the company: a few relevant posts, interactions with the company's content, a recently updated profile. A profile that's been completely inactive for years and suddenly applies can come across as disengaged.
